Why choose digital foil sleeking?
Traditional foil stamping requires a custom die to be manufactured for the specific artwork. That tooling adds cost to the project and makes smaller quantities less economical.
Digital foil sleeking is a die-free process. Because the foil pattern is created digitally, there is no custom metal die to manufacture, store or replace when artwork changes.
This makes digital sleeking particularly well suited for:
- Short and medium production runs
- Premium business cards and marketing materials
- Product packaging and folding cartons
- Invitations and announcement cards
- Menus and presentation materials

How digital foil sleeking works
Digital foil sleeking is a multi-step process that uses digital printing, lamination, toner and heat to transfer the foil to specific areas of the printed piece.
Print the artwork
The base artwork is printed digitally on the selected stock. For our sleeking process, we typically use smooth stocks that are compatible with digital printing and the required finishing process.
Apply the laminate
A layer of laminate is applied to the printed piece before the foil is added. Depending on the desired appearance and application, we can use gloss, matte or tactile soft-touch (suede) lamination.
The laminate provides a smooth, consistent surface for the subsequent foil application.
Print the foil layer
The areas that will receive foil are printed as a separate digital layer on top of the lamination. The toner acts as the bonding surface for the foil.

Apply the foil
The laminated, foil-printed sheet passes through the sleeking machine. Heat and pressure activate the foil film, transferring the metallic foil to the toner-printed areas.
The result is a clean, reflective foil finish that follows the digital artwork.

The biggest advantage is the elimination of custom die tooling. Your foil artwork is created digitally rather than engraved into a metal stamping die.

Without the upfront cost of a custom die, digital foil can make premium foil finishes practical for quantities that would otherwise be difficult to justify.
Faster production
There is no die fabrication stage before production. Once the artwork and materials are approved, the job can move directly into production based on our production schedule.
Easy artwork changes
Because the foil pattern is digitally produced, changing a logo, name, version or design does not require manufacturing a new stamping die.
Excellent for variable and personalized printing
Digital production makes it possible to incorporate different names, versions or other variable elements into the foil artwork.

Things to consider
Digital foil sleeking is versatile, but it is not identical to traditional foil stamping. Choosing the right process depends on the look you want, the material being used and the quantity being produced.
It is a flat finish
Digital sleeking creates a foil finish on the surface of the piece. It does not create the deep impression or raised and debossed effect that can be produced with traditional foil stamping and embossing.
If your design requires a pronounced tactile impression, traditional foil stamping may be the better choice.
Stock selection matters
Digital sleeking performs best on smooth, compatible surfaces. Textured or heavily porous stocks can affect toner coverage, adhesion and the consistency of the foil.

Foil registration has normal production tolerance
As with any multi-step printing and finishing process, slight movement can occur between the printed artwork and the foil layer. Shifts of 1/32 inch are considered normal production tolerance.
For this reason, designs with extremely tight registration requirements should be reviewed with our production team before ordering.
Setting up your foil artwork
Foil jobs need two files: your printed artwork, and a separate file containing only the foil areas. The foil file must be vector, 100% black, and the exact same size and position as the artwork file.
Getting this right the first time is the difference between a job that runs on schedule and a round of emails.
